Birkenstocks aren’t just an icon of comfort and minimalist design: they’re a philosophy of life.
Those who wear them know well that once you try them, it's difficult to go back.
The secret to their success lies in the quality of the materials and the artisanal care of the footbed, but to keep them always beautiful and comfortable it is essential to learn how to clean Birkenstocks correctly.
In this guide, we'll explain everything—from cleaning the upper to caring for the footbed—to help them last longer without ruining their natural structure.
Knowing the parts of the Birkenstock
Before proceeding with cleaning, it is important to know what it is made of:
Upper: the upper part, made of smooth leather, suede, nubuck or synthetic materials (Birko-Flor®);
Insole: in cork and natural latex, covered in suede;
Sole: made of lightweight, elastic and wear-resistant EVA.
Each part requires specific cleaning — a unique approach that protects the naturalness of the materials.
Cleaning the upper: smooth leather, suede or synthetic leather
Upper in smooth leather or nubuck
Remove dust with a soft, dry cloth;
Use a specific cleaner for natural leather, gently dabbing the surface;
After cleansing, apply a nourishing cream or wax to keep the leather soft and shiny; let it dry away from heat sources.
Avoid excess water: the skin tends to absorb it, causing blemishes or stiffness.
Suede or nubuck upper
Use a suede brush (preferably crepe rubber) to remove dust and debris;
In case of stains, use a slightly damp cloth or a specific suede eraser;
After cleaning, let it dry and then brush again to revive the pile of the material.
A touch of specific waterproofing spray will protect the upper from rain and future stains.
Upper in Birko-Flor® or Birkibuc
These synthetic materials, ideal for those who do not use products of animal origin, are easy to maintain.
Clean with a damp cloth and neutral soap;
Dry with a clean cloth and let air dry;
Avoid oily or abrasive products.
