Birkenstock size guide: narrow or regular width and which size to choose

Birkenstock sandals are chosen with three pieces of information: the size, which depends on the length of your foot, the width, narrow or regular, which depends on how wide it is, and the model's fit. They're the same models made in two widths. At faraone.shop you'll find Birkenstock in narrow width, the sleeker version. In this Birkenstock size guide you'll find the chart with foot length and width and how the Arizona, Madrid and Boston fit.

Narrow or regular width: what's the difference?

The width only concerns how wide the footbed is: the same model, for example the Arizona, comes in two versions with the same size.

  • Narrow width: about 5 millimetres slimmer, with a sleeker line on the foot;
  • Regular width: wider, designed for broad feet;
  • How to recognise it: a footprint is printed on the footbed, solid for narrow width and outlined, just the contour, for regular width.

How do you measure your foot for Birkenstock?

Measure barefoot, with your heel against a wall: mark the tip of your big toe and measure the length in millimetres. Then measure the width at the widest point of the foot. The length gives you the size; the width tells you whether narrow width suits your foot. Birkenstock has no half sizes: if you're between two sizes, take the larger one.

How Birkenstock fit, model by model

What changes from one model to another is the fit, and the product page shows it for each colour.

Why does faraone.shop sell the narrow width?

The narrow width follows the foot closely and gives Birkenstock a slimmer, neater line, the one you see on the street. It suits most feet: the regular width is mainly for very wide feet. If your foot touches the side edges of the footbed, narrow width isn't for you.

How do the Birkenstock Arizona and Madrid fit?

It depends on the version. The suede Arizona, the Arizona Triples and the EVA versions of the Arizona Big Buckle and Madrid Big Buckle have a regular fit: take the size that matches the length of your foot. Some women's versions in leather or synthetic, such as some Arizona and Madrid Big Buckle, have a small fit: consider one size up.

  • Regular fit: the size in the chart;
  • Small fit: one size up;
  • In any case: check the Fit field on the product page of the colour you've chosen.

How do the Birkenstock Boston fit?

The Boston is a clog closed at the toe: the foot can't move forward, so the room at the front matters more than in a sandal. The leather Boston has a small fit: take one size up from the chart. As with the other models, check the Fit field on the product page of the colour you choose.

How much room should there be in Birkenstock?

The whole foot should rest on the footbed without touching the edges. At the front there should be about 1 centimetre between your toes and the edge, and about half a centimetre behind the heel. The straps are adjusted with the buckles: your foot shouldn't slide forward as you walk.

A Birkenstock is chosen with three checks: the length for the size, the width for narrow or regular, and the model's fit to know whether to add a size. Every product page on faraone.shop shows the Fit field: Regular or Small.

On faraone.shop you'll find a selection of Birkenstock in narrow width for women and men, from the Arizona to the Madrid Big Buckle, the Boston and the EVA versions, with fast shipping, free size exchanges and 30 days to return.

Three arches, one footprint

A footbed that only works in the right size

In the right size your foot rests where the footbed supports it.

The Birkenstock anatomical footbed supports the three arches of the foot and moulds to your stride with wear. It only works if the foot rests in the right place: with a size too small the heel slips out of the heel cup, with one too big the arches don't line up with the support.
